Without photos, film, proper documentation, history dissolves into the soft focus of personal memory. Following on from the book A Scene In Between, which covered the years 1980-1988, director, Paul Kelly from Heavenly Films is currently editing a film which will fully engage with this same important period which partly followed on from punk music.
At the time it was mostly unlabelled, seen as a kind of independent almost pop music (later shortened to indie), which connected up a cluster of melodic groups that went all the way from the fragile to the ferocious - Television Personalities, Orange Juice, Dolly Mixture, Marine Girls, Strawberry Switchblade, The Pastels, Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3, Loop, The Vaselines and of course, many, many others.
We already have an incredible cache of unseen footage (film, video, photographs) but we’d now like to widen the net to try to explain not only the scene in between, but what was going on around it in 1980s Britain. So, we’re interested in anything you might have relating to those groups but also to other music culture, art events, clubs, shows, cities, street life, home life, job centres, political events, CND rallies. Maybe your parents were in a cine-club or you had a Super-8 camera or did something as part of a personal project, maybe you recently turned up some weird stuff at a jumble sale.
No matter how much of a tangent, how small, it will help us to tell this story. We want to get it right and to do that we need to be exactly in the moment.
